Yesterday was a very exciting day at Atlanta Kick where the 2nd annual Karate Tournament was held. The audience was treated to a spectacular demonstration of skills by the STORM team. Karate students of all ages took to the mat to show off their talents in such competitions as Sparring, Board Breaking, and Traditional and Creative Forms. Congratulations to this year's tournament winners:

The anticipation is building for this year's karate tournament. The mats at the studio have been busy with students practicing board breaking, sparring techniques and their forms. Mark your calendars for the Atlanta Kick Karate Tournament 2010 event on Saturday, March 20th. The deadline for entries has been extended so for more details, see Ms. Massa or Mr. Hampton in the AK Office. There will also be a special appearance by the STORM team!

We weren't supposed to have Tournament practice today since we had a STORM Team meeting, but those who could stay, stayed 45 minutes late to work on the STORM Team demonstration! In today's STORM Team meeting we talked about Communicating. It is important to remember a few key points: don't be afraid to ask questions; don't interrupt; and, call in if you are going to be absent (or even late.) Good leaders are good communicators. Next meeting will be Saturday, February 6th at noon.

King of the Hill

Just what is King of the Hill anyway you might ask? Today it turned into fun, laughter and a little bit of sweet revenge for some parents! For example, look at what happened when Sonny challenged his Dad. Let's just say, Dad is strong as a bull!
And don't let the sweet picture to the left fool you. This photo was taken after Mrs. Warren proved she is queen on the mat - even after her two sons challenged her! STORM Team meeting - A member of the U. S. Marine Corp. came to pick up toys that were donated to "Toys for Tots." We discussed the Class Planner about "Taking Initiative." Basically, the message is don't waste time while you are at the Studio. [If you see something that needs to be done at the Studio, don't wait to be asked... take care of it! If the floor is dirty - vacuum; if the chairs are messed up - straighten them. Instead of staring at the episode of Tom & Jerry that you have already seen 332,456 times, review the Samurai curriculum.] Then we took the W.E.B.S. Personality Test to determine if we were Wolves, Eagles, Butterflies or Spiders. Last, we discussed games and ideas we had to keep the students involved in classes, and how to handle disruptive students. Next meeting will be January 16th at noon.

Toys for Tots

Thank you to every- one who brought in Toys for Tots. A marine stopped by Atlanta Kick today (can you find him in this picture?) so that the STORM and Leadership Teams could present him with 2 huge boxes filled with toys.

Last night was a big night; two of our STORM Team members were approved to test for their Black Belts. Congratulations to David Oglesby and Sonny Romeo who will test on February 26th. STORM Teams members helped today with the Little Ninja and Samurai belt tests. Helping with board breaking is not as easy as it looks!

Tonight is the Black Belt test. This will be the debut of the STORM team in our new uniforms. (The white pants with the AK logo came in over the Thanksgiving weekend.) Several team members will be on the panel and several are testing. Hope there is a "buzz."

Self-defense classes were held at Atlanta Kick today. Several STORM team members assisted with the class to teach kids how to handle bullies at school and on the playground. It was a good refresher of points to teach on the mat during the Safety Cycle.

New red Gi's were ordered for the eight members of the AK Storm Team. The team voted to have white pants to complete the Team uniform. The red Gi jackets have a "STORM" patch and black chevrons will be placed on the sleeve to show the number of classes each team members has assisted with.

In November 2009, Atlanta Kick invited its first STORM Team members to participate in an exciting new program. The STORM Team would be a "Special Team of Role Models" that would help with Atlanta Kick's Karate program. These new STORM Team members will be Sonny Romeo, Dominic Romeo, Adam Sanders, Max Levy, Sam Levy, David Oglesby, Rob Warren and Paris Watel-Young.

In October, some of the AK staff spent a weekend at a research and development martial arts school. One thing we discovered was an elite group of promising martial artists as well as leaders. This group of students was called the STORM team, which stands for special team of role models. The storm team led the warm-ups, helped individual students and ran drills. Off the mat, they carried themselves with respect, confidence and a sense of integrity.

Atlanta kick has hand picked 8 students based on certain criteria to become the first Atlanta Kick STORM Team. They will be trained not only to teach classes on their own but to also become a leader in their schools and communities.

We will be looking out for individuals who we think have promise of becoming a storm team leader. We are very excited for this group to grow and become our next generation of martial arts instructors.
